The Artist's Role in Today's World

Where Do/How Do We Fit In?

The role of the artist is as ancient as mankind-- perhaps older, according to many religions and beliefs. Our roles can be as complex as visionaries, philosophers, renegades-- pushing the envelope of everyday societies. But I'd like to explore the larger sense of our position in humanity, one that transcends labels and vocabulary itself.

If you were to begin with the elemental beginnings of art itself, a "burning" (as discussed in previous hubs/articles), like creation itself (making something from nothing), it is every bit an element to our earth as rain, water, wind-- and fire. It can be perceived as a spark that emits inexplicably from the perceived darkness of nothing. Elemental. Yet an artistic inspiration may even have no beginning and no end-- it has always been with the artist and may always be, simply having manifested within the moment. It may, in that sense, be thought of like a seed that has laid dormant beneath many blankets of snow, only now to begin to shoot out towards the sun and eventually bloom-- and it can bloom endlessly and without limitations, reaching into the cosmos itself. But, back to our more "earthly" selves...

As we meditate, pray or chant, we reach our consciousness inward to expand to the outward to the infinite, to connect with whatever our beliefs tell us is "the source." That in itself is a creation, that making connection, the act itself. And it's within the sparks of this connection to "the source" that inspiration (artistic vision or dreams of something better) can be born with a much deeper richness, a much higher value to all-- as if raining down to us from the spiritual, higher conscience "firmament" that covers all.

It is from these pure beginnings, or point of manifestation more accurately, that gives each inspiration or artistic vision a nature that transcends any everyday issue, concern, judgment, or even value. It literally shines a light into the darkness of human constraints, human structures, human frailties, and even human egos, to light a way towards a purer understanding of our place as life within each other and the infinite-- a path that leads back to "the source."

It's my hope, my understanding and my vision that leads me to believe that any artist should accept and celebrate their role as this: a transcendental beacon. As each of us works to better understand our connection to "the source", our role becomes increasingly more clear: we must strive to shine the way towards truth, transcendence and/or clarity of self. We take on a role much like that of Mercury: a messenger to humanity from "the source." I'm not saying that we are gods or even demi-gods in any way; but we can be purveyors of pure, truthful light-- and primarily due to our well-practiced and mostly innate abilities to imagine, to sense and to express. It is a grand role indeed!

In your practical lives, I hope that each of you continues working towards the light, "the source", your purest point of vision and expression-- and CELEBRATE your abilities with every breath you take.

Namaste!

The Artist's Message to the World

To further explore the "role" played by the Artist in today's global society (our Message to the world at large), it's important to understand the true nature of Creation itself.

At some point during the creative process, every artist experiences themselves as a certain type of "conduit" through which an inspiration flows. Regardless of the intent of the physical expression of the art piece (or form for that matter), its true source must have generated from the pure Self. Abundant Love for your true Self must be present in order for the "connection" to hold strong and yet free-- allowing for a free flowing to occur through the physical conduit of Self. Therefore, whether the physical expression of the art arrives through rage, contentment, outrage, or the purest sense of love, the initial intent to create comes directly from the Light of "the source" as experienced by the pure Self. For example, if you are writing a piece on having been the victim of a tremendous wrong in your life, it is Love of your pure Self that generates the intent for the creation first and then drives you forward towards the emotional physical expression; in this case, the expression probably being about anger or resentment or frustration. If you were to use this Love for pure Self (and the Joy blossoming from it) to drive your emotional physical expression, your work could flourish with greater dimensions and your endurance for that work can actually increase (there are no limits when connected to "source"). This process is parallel to the "boiling" technique found in my hub "Cultivate with Joy to Grow Creativity", in that its origin is that of Love for pure Self. And, yes, connection to pure Self can lead to even more intense emotions within the physical expression, regardless of the nature of the emotions.

Having this process and structure in mind, I present to you that the Artist's message to the world is quite clear-- "Love your pure Self to express YOUR own Truth." And, interestingly enough, if Love for pure Self is practiced, the love for the expressions and art of others grows! So, our role brings dimension to the value of Love for the world to experience-- and learn from, be provoked by or to simply be inspired. In this light, you may find that Artists can be considered as teachers (whether teaching is our profession or goal-- or not). We were meant, in my opinion, to shine Light into ALL areas, with pure intent and driven by limitless Love.

Accepting the role as a ' transcendental beacon' opens the door for continual knowledge and success with whatever paths we take, I will certainly celebrate my abilities and continue to strive and will reach my goal I believe one day that my book that is being published will one day be on the silver screen, I believe it and I have recieved it. Your article has provided even more insight that we have the ability to succeed if we also look into ourselves and believe. :)

All true, AEvans-- right on!

If we simply accept, believe, the purity of the light from our source (regardless of the vocabulary attached to that source by any religion), we can better prosper and celebrate our individual talents and value-- AND even celebrate those elements of whatever religion we may attach ourselves to that encourage such acceptance/belief. Within the Christian belief, one may even find that love of God that is promoted as being in ALL of us.

Best wishes for your journeys!

I'm grateful for your insights, James! Happy to be a fan as well.

The "elemental" refers specifically to our physical world. It is derived from the basic "work" we do to bring our inspirations from limitless-dimension into the 3-dimensional. I present that what is produced by this transition, this "work", needs to be perceived as "elemental" (in its simplest, purest material form).

Within our physical world, that thinking opens limitless possibilities for the expression of the initial inspiration. It is remaining connected to our Inner Selves that will guide us to, or boil down to, the best choice of technique to express our experience of the inspiration.

Simply put, the process for the "elemental" is:

Inspiration > Experience > "Footprint of Experience" (Image or Idea) > Element > Inner Self Processing (Meditation or Deep Thought-- without expectation) > Choice of Expression

You write beautifully Spiritactor and offer your readers much food for thought. As you say, we are all made up of miraculous seeds of information- the source of unlimited potential. We are all gifted in many ways, but those we have come to call "artists" have discovered (or perhaps have simply chosen) to exercise their gift for communicating the beauty and wisdom of the universe to others. Namaste and welcome to Hubpages!

Our expressive artistic abilities immediately connect us to our higher selves, our higher selves provide us with the messages to deliver to the world.

I enjoyed this thank you :)

Yes, Fenzero-- oh so true.

For my purposes, I am speaking to the challenge that many perceive to have with the actual "connection." I am offering actual structure to a certain process that can lead to such connection, for anyone-- no matter their personal beliefs or psychological dispositions. I'm attempting (at least) to present certain "road signs" that can direct a way towards that purity, that Light, that love of Inner Self and thus "higher self" (and, in a way, I refrain from using the term "higher" too much because, for some, it implies a certain ego sourcing).

Thank you for your deep perceptions and spirit!

I always felt that the emotional greatness created by art (whatever form) will bring together the Creator (artist) with The Creator (God) and the Art Consumer in order to form the Trinity of Perfection.

Thank you for a great Hub

Thank you, Petra-- I'm grateful. What a wonderfully hope-FULL perception, a Trinity of Perfection. I do believe that such an alliance of the experiences of beauty could serve as a beacon towards Perfection; could illuminate what should and can be for mankind. In my beliefs, perfection is a conscientious orientation while we're here on this earth, in these bodies, rather than an actual achievement; but, by our experience of it alone, I do agree with the indication of perfection and certainly believe in the simple structural power of trinity.

I am very grateful for today, as it will be Day 1 to "own up" my true identity as an artist in various different modalities. I have given up the concept of "survival" on "getting a job just to get by" like "everyone else" (still a dominant programmed mind-set of people around me). It's not that I don't want to "conform" but I know a road block had been placed there to prevent me from deviating ever again from my True Self and my True Calling. My partner resents me for not getting a day job. How do I tell him that an inner calling is begging me to follow, away from the path most traveled. My father (a frustrated artist) had programmed me again and again that "art does not pay". As a result I really suffered to grow and prosper as an artist. But now, right now, today, I am at a cross road where the other fork is blocked by the higher force. I must travel on as an artist/co-creator or life has no meaning or purpose. I know now that I've run out of time to delay. There's such urgency boiling in my blood. There's such excitement in my spirit. Yet I found myself confining it to you, a total stranger I "met" for the first time in here. For now, you are the only person who could possibly understand, and I am grateful for finding your hub first thing this morning on DAY 1. I believe in signs. And you are another beautiful sign that my guides are putting all around me, in my dreams, in my meditations, in my innermost knowing.

Thank you for the reminder to connect to my "Love for the True Self", to the Source. I feel like singing and dancing now, and Celebrate with all the millions of sparkling filaments of my Being of finally being in purpose, for finally accepting the reason for my being.

You are my alley now. (for I am very much alone in this endeavor in my day to day world)

I will sure come back to read on, for courage, for support and for inspiration.

Blessings xoxo
